Do I need thumb rings or finger inserts for my shears?

We know having a cool new pair of shears is very exciting! Not only should your shears look good, but they should feel good too! We want you to be comfortable! And here's how.

What are finger inserts?

When you open your new shears you will notice that their case has a few extra accessories for you! Along with these accessories you will find multiple finger rings, or finger inserts. They may look so basic, just black plastic, silicone or rubber rings, but they are so important!

Why do you need finger inserts?

Unfortunately we can't make each scissor to fit each person, it would be very expensive. However it is important to have shears that fit your fingers and hands correctly. Scissors are not one size fits most. That is why we include these finger rings to help you insure your scissors fit correctly.

Why is it so important that your scissors fit correctly? First is comfort. If your scissors are too big or small they won't feel comfortable in your hands. Your grip will be affected as well if the sizing is wrong. Control is another reason. If your finger holes are too big you will struggle to control your shears. Your shears will be sliding off your hands! This can also lead to accidentally dropping your shears if they slip off your finger. So making sure they fit correctly will help protect your purchase as well as your hands! If they're too small you will not be able to move your shears in your hand with speed and control.

There are two ring holes on every pair of scissors. One is your thumb hole and the other is for your ring finger. When your shears arrive you may notice that we have already put one insert in each hole. This is just an estimate for sizing. It is up to you to size your shears to your fingers. Don't worry we can help with that too.

Getting the Perfect Fit

As we mentioned earlier you have two finger holes, your thumb and ring finger. To fit your ring finger correctly the hole should be between the first and second knuckle of your finger. Your pinky finger should then rest comfortably on the finger rest. You should have a little extra space to allow for a bit of movement from your ring finger. If there is too much space your shears will not stay comfortably between the first and second knuckle.

Then there is your thumb finger hole. Your shears should sit on the cuticle of your nail or just before it. If your scissors are closer to the knuckle they are too loose. You will need to make sure that the scissors have a little bit of room to move. When we cut hair we need to be able to remove our thumb quickly while we are cutting.

Once you know exactly where your shears should sit you can start adding or removing finger rings.

Use those finger rings!

So while they may seem small and insignificant, finger rings or inserts are an important part of your shears. Most scissors will need at least one to help fit your hands perfectly.
