Models with fewer than 40 teeth then generally turn into texturizers - which isn't what you want when you’re trying to thin hair. The teeth on the thinners should all have the same size and must be spaced evenly. If they aren’t, you can probably guess what may happen- the haircut won't be great at all!

Although thinners are designed to thin hair, that's not all they are capable of doing. In fact, hair thinning shears are great finishing tools to remove any unwanted heavy lines in haircuts and leave the haircut with a smooth, blended look. A lot of skill is required to be able to use these without getting carried away, so please be careful!

Texturizing Shears

To put it simply, texturizing shears are scissors designed to add texture to the hair. They generally have anywhere from 5 to 25 evenly distanced teeth. The wider the tooth section is, the more hair can get literally chopped away.

Much like in hair thinning shears, the teeth on the texturizing scissors are on one side of the blade, leaving the second blade straight allowing the scissors to create the cutting effect. Depending on how aggressive you want your texturizer to be, you will need to pick wisely on how many teeth you want on your shear. The fewer teeth on the shear - the more aggressive the cuts will be. This shear is absolutely perfect for wisping out the ends of thick blunt hair or wisping out bangs that are simply not sitting right. Much like with the hair thinning shears, please, please be careful when texturizing because one wrong snip can cost you a chunk of your client’s hair!

• Once you are finished with your final haircut of the day, start by wiping down your shears with a clean dry cloth. If you must disinfect your scissors, you may do so by spraying them and drying them immediately (we still have to be COVID-safe, people!). Don't leave any water, chemicals, dirt, or hair on your scissors - it can lead to rust on your shears.
• After you wipe down your shears, open the shears and oil them in the screw area on both sides. Gently open and close the scissor to allow the oil to distribute evenly.

• Once you're done with cleaning, oiling, and re-tensioning your scissors, put them back into your scissor case with the blades closed. If blades are open and not secure, you run the risk of exposing the edges of your blades to potential unwanted nicks, bends, and microdamage. Keep the case in a safe, dry place, and don't throw it around. Even if it's closed, it's better not to risk it!
• When your next working day comes, please only cut human hair. We know it may seem silly we even have to mention it but some people need to read this!! Any other material can bend or nick the edges and ruin your scissors.
• Lastly, service when needed isn't it obvious!? Depending on how often you use your hair-cutting scissors, be sure to get them sharpened (blunt scissors don’t cut hair well, if at all) and ready to work - don't forget about regular tensioning and re-oiling.

What To Keep in Your Trolley or Tool Belt

The majority, if not all hairdressers have a trolley or tool belt for their hair cutting tools, but what are the main things you need to get you started!? Well, look no further! The list below will help you put together your equipment so you have everything on hand and ready to go. So, what should be in your pro kit for salon or freelance work?

1. If it’s not obvious yet, SCISSORS! You will need one or two (minimum!) pairs of straight-cutting shears. We always say it's best to have at least two. The reason being, mainly in the unlikely circumstance that one needs to be sharpened or has been dropped or damaged - you have a back-up pair. Moving on, you need your thinners! Every stylist should have at least one pair of hair thinning shears on hand (or at least in their scissor case). Hold that thought - you also need a scissor case to keep your hairdressing tools safe and sound - duh!
2. 1 or more combs. You can’t cut hair with your scissors without a comb in the other hand, right!?
3. Clips - to section the hair. They really are a must! We swear!!
4. Brushes - multiple, and we mean multiple round brushes or at minimum 4 round brushes in different sizes for blow-drying the hair and 1 normal paddle brush for brushing the knots out. Some pros we know have about 15 round brushes and 2 normal paddle brushes they use on the daily basis. Do you think that's a lot? Well, there's a reason behind it! If you're about to start working in a salon, you'll soon learn that in a salon environment stuff goes missing and it isn't always your fault! Still, you'll end up needing to use a brush ASAP. That's why back-ups are a must!
5. Hairdryer – find your fav and blow hair away! Every pro stylist and barber needs a hairdryer!
6. Clippers – small and large clippers for the short haircuts and to clean the neck hairlines.
7. Neck brush – pretty obvious here! You'll need it to help clean away unwanted hair that has fallen after being cut. Nobody wants to get it under their shirt, isn't that right?
8. Well, there isn’t really an 8. Basically, anything else you want in your trolley or tool belt depends on your experience and what you feel are absolute must-haves for you to work.
